Coffee Cups And Cobwebs

recent work
Liner notesThe theme for November's songwriting challenge was 'ghost', and I'm not 100 per cent sure how I got here from there. I'm trying to write protagonists who are a bit darker, Richard Thompson- or Warren Zevon style. It's not really in my nature.

It's not the drop that does for you, it's how you hit the ground
He never stopped the spiral, he kept on spinning round
The cops say move along now, there's nothing here to see
But coffee cups and cobwebs where the curtains used to be

He made a killing trading volatility at scale
But he came a proper cropper when the copper markets failed
An edge case in the code base that his testing should have caught
Left him liabilities, and several million short

The bailiffs did a number on the timber of the door
And the massed unopened enveloped arrayed across the floor
It cost more to move the furniture than all of it was worth
And it seemed its former owner had vanished from the earth

It's not the drop that does for you, it's how you hit the ground
He never stopped the spiral, he kept on spinning round
They'll need a team of cleaners to clear out the debris
The coffee cups and cobwebs where the curtains used to be

A Patterdale discovered a cadaver at the beach
And a convenient conclusion was immediately reached
But according to my sources in Forensics on the force
The spokesman's declaration wasn't one that they'd endorsed

The mansion sold at auction, didn't fetch what it deserved
The neighbours say it's haunted, it barely made reserve
A fellow from the city that no-one's ever seen
Wants the place refurbished, wants the place pristine

It's not the drop that does for you, it's how you hit the ground
He never stopped the spiral, he kept on spinning round
Some days when the light hits right, people say they see
Coffee cups and cobwebs where the curtains used to be
